Leading global law firm Herbert Smith Freehills has promoted nine lawyers in Asia to counsel. The promotions span corporate, finance, employment and disputes, and are effective 1 May 2020.

These appointments are part of this year's 29-counsel promotion round, and follow last week's promotion of four new partners in Asia.

Irina Akentjeva, Corporate, Singapore
Irina is a highly experienced corporate lawyer specialising in energy and infrastructure transactions across Asia, with particular focus on Southeast Asia. She graduated from the University of Oxford with a bachelor's degree in jurisprudence, is admitted as a solicitor in England and Wales, and is bilingual in English and Russian.

James Allsop, Disputes, Tokyo
James advises clients on complex commercial disputes, primarily through international arbitration. He also works with clients on multi-jurisdictional fraud and corruption investigations, advising clients on anti-bribery and corruption matters, corporate governance and crisis management. He is admitted in England and Wales, is a qualified solicitor advocate, and is licensed to advise in Japan as a Gaikokuho Jimu Bengoshi.

Cellia Cognard, Corporate, Jakarta*
Cellia is a trilingual corporate M&A lawyer with extensive experience in cross-border public and private mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures and foreign investment transactions, focusing on the financial services, consumer, real estate and TMT sectors. She is admitted as a solicitor in New South Wales, Australia, and is fluent in English, French and Bahasa Indonesia.

Joseph Fisher, Corporate, Tokyo
Joseph advises Japanese clients on outbound M&A and joint venture transactions and general corporate matters across sectors, including consumer products, manufacturing and industrials and TMT. He is admitted to practice in New Zealand and in England and Wales, and is licensed to advise in Japan as a Gaikokuho Jimu Bengoshi.

Keith Gamble, Finance, Real Estate and Projects, Tokyo
Keith advises clients on the financing and development of energy and infrastructure assets with experience acting for lenders and borrowers across project finance, acquisition finance and other structured finance products. He is admitted in England and Wales and is licensed to advise in Japan as a Gaikokuho Jimu Bengoshi.

James Gong, Corporate/TMT, Beijing
James has extensive experience in advising clients on cross-border mergers and acquisitions and general corporate and regulatory issues, specialising in technology, media, and telecommunications (TMT) and cyber security/data protection. He has advised a number of multinational clients on TMT-related investment and corporate matters and is frequently quoted by the media.

Michael Long, Disputes, Hong Kong
Michael advises client on high-value and complex commercial disputes. Michael graduated with dual bachelor's degrees in law and economics from the University of Sydney. He has worked in the firm's London, Sydney and Hong Kong offices, and is admitted as a solicitor in England and Wales, New South Wales, Australia, and Hong Kong.

Tess Lumsdaine, EPI, Hong Kong
Tess is a highly rated disputes lawyer, specialising in advising multinational organisations on a broad range of employment matters across Asia.  She is admitted in New South Wales, Australia, and is qualified to practice in Hong Kong.

Ken Nam, Corporate, Seoul
Ken advises clients on outbound investment transactions and projects with a focus on the energy, resources and infrastructure sectors. He has previously worked in the firm's Sydney office and is admitted in New South Wales, Australia, and is registered as a Foreign Legal Consultant in Korea. Ken is fluent in English and Korean.
