Leading international law firm Herbert Smith Freehills has hired Jaime Bofill as a partner in the disputes practice to join the insurance team, led by Alejandra Galdos, in its Madrid office.
Jaime joins from CMS Albiñana & Suárez de Lezo where he headed the Insurance, Reinsurance & Innovation department at its Spanish office. Three new associates join with him in his team: Jorge Etreros, Guillermo Ruiz Barrilero and Sara Piñero, also from CMS.
Jaime has a broad contentious and non-contentious insurance practice. He conducts disputes and corporate regulatory/advisory matters for financial institutions, retail banking, payment services and in the emerging areas of Fintech and Insurtech. His regulatory practice has seen him develop relationships with the Spanish authorities, having been involved in numerous cases before the Directorate-General for Insurance and Pension Funds. Jaime’s advisory work includes legal advice in innovation projects in the Fintech and Insurtech arena. He has extensive regulatory experience and expertise in relationships with financial authorities through involvement in numerous procedures with the Bank of Spain and the Spanish Stock Market Regulator (CNMV) concerning all types of licences, innovative aspects such as PSD2 and the creation of sandbox projects. This type of legal advice in relation to such matters is still in its infancy and Jaime is at the forefront of its development.
Paulino Fajardo, Regional Head of Dispute Resolution for Europe, Middle East and Africa at Herbert Smith Freehills, comments: "Jaime's practice complements the work of our top-tier contentious insurance practice across the region. It adds further regulatory expertise to our offering in the financial and insurance sectors, including in emerging areas such as Fintech and Insurtech. We're delighted to welcome him on board."
Jaime Bofill comments: "There are significant synergies between the insurance expertise of Herbert Smith Freehills and my practice, and together we will be able to address the full spectrum of insurance issues faced by clients. I am particularly impressed by the firm's international and collaborative platform, which benefits our clients."
Jaime Bofill is the second partner to join the firm's Madrid office over the past year, following Finance partner Sergio Cires in January this year and the second EMEA disputes partner, after Dr Timo Buehler in October 2023.
The Madrid office currently boasts more than 140 professionals including 16 partners.
