Herbert Smith Freehills was named Africa-Wide International Law Firm of the Year: Projects & Energy at the Chambers Africa Awards 2023 for the second consecutive year. These awards recognise a law firm’s pre-eminence in key jurisdictions in the region and they also reflect achievements over the past 12 months, including outstanding work, impressive strategic growth and excellence in client service.
In granting this award, Chambers said that the firm "is consistently at the forefront of major energy projects in Africa" and quoted clients as saying that “they are responsive, and they take the time to find the right answers and analysis”; and have the “ability to get things done in difficult scenarios.”
Nina Bowyer, partner and Africa co-head at Herbert Smith Freehills says: “We are delighted to have won this award for the second straight year in recognition of the continued strength of our energy and projects practice in Africa, which follows our Johannesburg ALT team's win, also for the second year running, as Alternative Service Provider of the Year at The African Legal Awards 2022. We want to thank all our people across the firm who continuously give their best in delivering for our business and our clients in Africa".
Martin Kavanagh, partner and Africa co-head at Herbert Smith Freehills, says: "We would like to offer our thanks to our clients for entrusting us with their landmark projects and transactions in the energy and natural resources sectors in Africa. Our teams continue to be extremely busy in multiple industry sectors throughout the continent and worked on almost 1000 matters in 2022 which involved 195 partners located in Johannesburg and across our international network of offices. We are extremely proud of our group and the success we have achieved in Africa and are looking forward to some exciting projects and deals in Africa in 2023".
The firm was also short-listed by Chambers for Regional Law Firm of the Year: Francophone Africa, and Africa-Wide International Law Firm of the Year: Corporate/M&A.
