Herbert Smith Freehills is delighted to announce the promotion of Jun Bautista (Hong Kong) and Iain Maxwell (London) to Of Counsel.
Jun Bautista has substantial experience in the international arbitration arena, and is a Philippines expert. Qualified in New York and the Philippines, Jun joined Herbert Smith Freehills in 2012 from a U.S. energy-specialist firm. He previously also held roles as the founding director of International Centre for Dispute Resolution (ICDR) in Singapore, an associate at the Philippines’ largest law firm SyCip Salazar Hernandez & Gatmaitan, and also as a clerk for one of the justices of the Philippine Supreme Court. Jun previously taught international arbitration at the University of the Philippines College of Law and currently teaches the same course at the Ateneo School of Law in Manila. He is a founding member of HK45– a group of Hong Kong arbitration practitioners under the age of 45 – and member of the ICC Taskforce on the New York Convention.
May Tai, a partner in Herbert Smith Freehills' Greater China arbitration team, comments, "Jun's promotion is richly-deserved, and very timely given the rapid development of arbitration in Asia. He is one of very few arbitration experts with real experience of the emerging markets across Asia, and in particular of the Philippines market where we are increasingly active as a firm. In addition to helping the arbitration team, Jun's skill set has and will continue to be invaluable to our energy and infrastructure clients in the Philippines."
Iain Maxwell is an experienced international arbitration practitioner and advocate, with particular expertise in investment arbitration and public international law. Having graduated with a first class degree in Law from Cambridge, Iain qualified at the firm and has since practiced in our London and Singapore offices. He has acted in cases arising from all major industry sectors and in arbitration proceedings for or against states and state entities in Asia, Africa, Europe and Latin America. He has experience of arbitrations under the auspices of the ICC, LCIA, ICSID, and SIAC rules, and under a variety of governing laws. Iain also advises on sanctions, state immunity, maritime boundary, human rights and investment treaty issues.
Matthew Weiniger QC, partner in our London Arbitration Group comments, "I have worked with Iain since he was a trainee. He is a fantastic lawyer, with an ability to focus on the detail as well as see the bigger picture. He is a leading public international law specialist in his own right and a superb advocate."
