Herbert Smith Freehills is pleased to announce that the firm has once again been ranked as the only firm in Band One for International Arbitration across the Asia Pacific region. The ranking was confirmed in the latest 2015 edition of Chambers Asia-Pacific, published on 11 February 2015, and is the 6th year running that Herbert Smith Freehills has been ranked as the sole firm in the top category.

This is also the first year that Herbert Smith Freehills has been ranked as the only firm in Band One for international arbitration in Hong Kong/China, having shared top tier status with other firms in previous years.

May Tai, Hong Kong-based arbitration partner, commented:

"Our Greater China arbitration team is the largest in this region, which truly reflects the kinds of market-leading work we are doing. We have held our band one ranking for the past four years and this latest ranking is testament to us staying ahead of the competition."

May is one of the Notable Practitioners singled out by Chambers researchers as "one to note". She is listed alongside fellow international arbitration partners Justin D'Agostino (Global Head of Disputes Practice), Peter Godwin (Asia Head of Disputes), Alastair Henderson (Southeast Asia Managing Partner), Brenda Horrigan (Shanghai Office Head, Partner), Simon Chapman (Partner, Hong Kong), Jessica Fei (Partner, Beijing), David Gilmore (Partner, Tokyo), Emma Kratochvilova (Partner, Tokyo), Dominic Roughton (Global Head of Public International Law, Partner, Tokyo) and Bronwyn Lincoln (Partner, Melbourne).

According to Chambers, Herbert Smith Freehills' pre-eminent arbitration practice is identified as "expert in the market with notable gravitas in each of their regions." The firm is also "noted for its ability to co-ordinate between offices to draw on significant technical knowledge and industry expertise in a vast array of sectors."

Clients interviewed for the Chambers research have said:

  • "I think they are excellent; they are head and shoulders above the rest. On this matter they have been excellent – over and above my expectations, which were high in the first place."
  • "The firm that stands out is Herbert Smith Freehills – they have obviously made great strides in the arbitration space."
  • "Herbert Smith Freehills has great experience and knowledge of cases in the construction industry. It takes advantage of its global network to work with local counsel and provide services in a timely manner."
  • "The service quality is excellent; from the partners to the most junior associates they are uniformly first-class."

More widely, Herbert Smith Freehills' Dispute Resolution Practice has also been ranked Band One in China/Hong Kong, India, Japan, South Korea and Thailand.

Peter Godwin commented:

"This is a fantastic achievement and caps what has been another stellar year for our Asia Pacific arbitration team, with significant wins for some of our biggest clients in the highest profile cases. The fact that Chambers now regards us as the only top tier practice in Hong Kong and China, as well as the only firm in Band One across the region as a whole, is something we are very proud of."
