On 10 September 2019 European Commission President-Elect Ursula von der Leyen presented her list of nominees for the next College of Commissioners, due to take office on 1 November 2019. In an unexpected turn of events, she has proposed that Margarethe Vestager continues in her current role as the Commissioner for Competition, alongside a new role as Executive Vice-President co-ordinating the Commission's agenda on creating "a Europe fit for the Digital Age".

Vestager had indicated in a number of newspaper interviews earlier this year that she would like to serve another term as Commissioner for Competition, but it was widely expected that the post would go to another nominee, with Sylvie Goulard (currently deputy governor of the Banque de France) being recently touted as the front-runner. However, subject to confirmation by the European Parliament and the European Council, Vestager will now have the opportunity to continue to lead high-profile competition cases against large technology companies (as well as in other sectors of the economy) whilst also co-ordinating the wider regulatory response to the challenges of the digital economy.
