DARE MORE PROGRESS – An alliance for freedom, justice and sustainability. Roughly eight weeks after the Federal Government election on 26 September 2021 the Social Democratic Party (the SPD), Bündnis 90 (Alliance 90) / The Greens and the Free Democratic Party (the FDP) reached consensus on the coalition agreement on 24 November 2021.
The new federal government was sworn in on 8 December 2021 and is therefore now able to validly implement the coalition agreement. Robert Habeck is responsible for the areas of energy and climate, marking the first time a member of The Greens has held the role of Minister for Economy, Energy and Climate Protection. His ministry will, in addition to general economic policy, cover SMEs and renewable energy as well as the expansion of the electricity network. This remit (albeit defined by slightly different parameters) has to date been held by Peter Altmaier (CDU).The latest revision of the Ministry has created a veritable super-ministry with 2,000 employees (by comparison, the Directorate General for Environment, Energy and Climate in the European Commission has fewer) and an annual budget of around €10 billion.
This article gives a short overview of the key themes of the coalition agreement from an energy perspective, and takes stock of the most important points.
