Today, the Honourable Cameron Dick MP has exercised a power under section 275R of the Planning Act 2016 (QLD) (Planning Act) to extend the currency period of any current development approvals by a period of 6 months.

  • Earlier this year, amendments were made to the Planning Act and one of those amendments allow the Minister to extend any period under the Planning Act if it was necessary because of the 'applicable event', being COVID-19.
  • Today, the Honourable Cameron Dick MP has made this announcement to extend the currency period of any current development approvals by a period of 6 months.
  • This universal extension continues to have effect even once the notice period ends on 31 October 2020, and the extension will apply to any development approvals granted on or before 31 October 2020..

What development approvals receive the extension?

The Honourable Cameron Dick MP has exercised the power under section 275R of the Planning Act to extend or suspend any periods under the Planning Act.

The universal extension applies to any current development approval granted under the Planning Act on or before 31 October 2020. For example, if a development approval is due to lapse for not commencing the use, finishing works or registering a survey plan on or before 30 December 2020, the development approval will now lapse on 30 June 2021.

The extension does not apply to development approvals for building works when demolition, removal and rebuilding must start and be completed.
