Since 15 April 2015, Historic England has been the name for the Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission for England (previously English Heritage). Historic England must be notified of any applications for listed building consent. A new Direction was made in relation to arrangements for handling heritage applications, outlining procedures for notifying Historic England and National Amenity Societies (Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, Victorian Society etc.) and the Secretary of State and this came into force on 15 April 2015. This new Direction replaces the previous circulars which set out the procedure in relation to notifying English Heritage.
