Aobakwe is an associate in the Projects, Energy and Infrastructure practice group with vast experience in Project finance.

Aobakwe has a particular focus on finance documents in syndicated lending environment and has a keen interest in Public Private Partnership and the regulatory framework that governs such partnerships. He has acquired vast experience in various Project Finance matters, ranging from advising Preferred Bidders in the Risk Mitigation IPP Procurement Programme. As well as advising and assisting an international consortium, bid for the financing and construction of one of the largest express motorways in Africa.

Aobakwe holds an LLB from the University of the Witwatersrand.

Selected matters

  • Kampala Jinja Expressway – The transaction was collaborative effort between Herbert Smith Freehills' London and Johannesburg Finance teams, where Aobakwe worked as a part of the legal team that provided financial legal advice to Consortium in respect of the Project Agreement for the design, build, finance, operation and maintenance of a prospective road in Uganda
  • Project Rose – Part of the legal team assisting and advising Standard Bank with the acquisition of ROMPCO
  • EDF Renewable Energies – Drafting various project documents related to the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme
  • representing Air Liquide in respect of the signing of new long-term contract to supply 97.5 MW of renewable power to Sasol's Secunda site
  • Aobakwe was part of the legal team that advised Kore Potash with the drafting of their project documents for a Kola Potash Project in Kouilou Province of the Republic of Congo
  • involved in a due diligence advising Axxela and Royal Bafokeng on the sale process in respect of Sasol’s pipeline network reviewing Sasol’s Anti Bribery and Corruption policy framework (Project Trout)
