Azaara is a versatile litigator with experience in Australian and cross-border insolvency disputes and class actions, as well as criminal matters.  

Azaara focuses on large-scale commercial litigation, representing leading Australian clients including in the banking, mining and energy sectors in State and Federal Courts. Together, Azaara’s attention to detail, ability to get across large volumes of material quickly and commercial-mindedness allow her to devise effective solutions to complex disputes.

Background

Azaara holds a Bachelor of Laws (First Class Hons) and Bachelor of Commerce (Corp Fin) from the University of Adelaide. She has also recently completed a Master of Laws (LLM) with Distinction at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) in London.

Before joining Herbert Smith Freehills, she served as Associate to the (late) Honourable Justice Malcolm Blue in the Supreme Court of South Australia and subsequently was a criminal prosecutor with the Office of the Director of Prosecutions (SA).

She was first admitted as a barrister and solicitor in the Supreme Court of South Australia.

Selected matters

  • R v Alzuain and Ors (led by J Pearce KC) – instructing solicitor on an eight co-accused murder matter in South Australia, which involved applications for a permanent stay, various voir dire and evidentiary issues and running of an extensive 4-month jury trial*
  • R v Harrap; R v Moyse (led by M G Hinton KC) – juniored the South Australian Director of Public Prosecutions on an appeal against sentence by a former Magistrate for the offences of deception and conspiracy to commit abuse of public office*
  • Duncan As Liquidator of WDR Iron Ore Pty Ltd (In Liq) v SMA Industries Pty Ltd [2020] SASC 88 (briefed Brendon Roberts KC) – acted for the liquidator of Western Desert Resources, which operated an Iron Ore mine in Roper Bar in the Northern territory and collapsed in 2014*
  • Royal Adelaide Hospital Construction Dispute – representing the South Australian State Government in litigation and arbitration proceedings regarding various strategic, legal and commercial issues concerning defaults, delays and disputes arising out of the design, construction and operation of the State’s newest major health facility*
