Dan specialises in investment treaty arbitration, public international law and international commercial arbitration.

He has worked on both contentious and advisory investment treaty arbitration matters and has previously been involved in treaty protection advice in relation to investment structuring.

He has also worked on commercial arbitrations across various industry sectors including energy, financial services and mining and has experience acting under the rules of various ad hoc and institutional arbitration rules (including ICC, LCIA, ICSID and UNCITRAL). He has experience in acting for states, state-owned entities and major companies.

Having trained with the firm, Dan has also developed expertise on the intersection of disputes and regulation, including in relation to energy regulation, corruption investigations, UK and EU sanctions, foreign direct investment reviews, competition law and other regulatory regimes.

Background

Dan has a First Class degree in law from University College London. As part of his studies, he completed a year abroad studying German law at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. Dan’s languages include German, Ukrainian and Russian.  ​

  • a Central Asian government and its national oil company in ICSID arbitration proceedings brought against it by UK and Georgia-based investors under a BIT and the ECT in connection with their withdrawal from a major oil field and related contractual issues
  • a South-East European state in ICSID arbitration proceedings brought by an investor in relation to a privatisation project in the real estate sector*
  • a West African state in an LCIA arbitration concerning termination of a mining licence
  • an independent power producer in an LCIA arbitration against a South Asian state under a sovereign guarantee to recover amounts payable by the power purchaser under a power purchase agreement 
  • an independent power producer in LCIA arbitrations against a South Asian state-owned power purchaser in relation to a tariff dispute
