Carmen specializes in cross-border competition, regulation and trade matters for Japanese clients.

Carmen is a Senior Associate in the Competition, Regulation and Trade practice of Herbert Smith Freehills in Tokyo.

Located in Japan, Carmen advises on all aspects of EU and German competition law, including merger control, FDI and FSR filings for joint ventures or outbound investment, as well as antitrust investigations and litigation.

Carmen also has experience advising on cross-border corporate and commercial matters, including M&A deals, joint ventures and licensing agreements.

Prior to coming to Japan, Carmen worked in Brussels, advising and representing clients on matters before the Court of Justice of the European Union, the Federal Cartel Office of Germany and the EU Commission and complex internal investigations.

Carmen is admitted to practice law in Germany and is a Registered Foreign Lawyer (Federal Republic of Germany) in Japan (Gaikokuho Jimu Bengoshi).

In addition to her native German, Carmen speaks English, French and Japanese.

Background

Carmen holds a PhD in European contract law from Humboldt-University Berlin and a Master of Laws (LL.M.) from Columbia Law School (New York). She has completed traineeships at the European Commission (DG Competition) and the Japan Fair Trade Commission.
