Sam is an Associate in the Dispute Resolution team in Dubai.

Sam is an Australian-qualified Associate in the Dubai disputes practice with a focus on complex, large scale construction and engineering disputes in the energy and infrastructure sectors. Prior to joining Herbert Smith Freehills, Sam worked out of Brisbane, Australia, where he assisted clients in Australia and Papua New Guinea with disputes concerning major infrastructure and mining projects, in particular disputes concerning mining, commercial real estate, and road and rail infrastructure.

Background

Sam relocated to Dubai in 2023, having previously trained and practised in Australia.

  • Omani project companies with international sponsors in ICC arbitration arising out of defects impacting two combined cycle power plants in Oman, including significant gas turbine defects
  • a UAE-based investment company in relation to a successful anti-suit injunction application before the DIFC Courts concerning disputes relating to the design, construction and operation of a hospital project in the UAE
  • a Chinese technology conglomerate on various aspects of its strategic exit from a major data centre construction project in the Middle East
  • a tollroad owner in Queensland Supreme Court proceedings relating to claims for defective works and loss of toll revenue arising out of an AUD $2 billion motorway upgrade project*
  • a design and construct joint venture in respect of ACICA arbitration arising out of an AUD $1.6 billion road development project *
