Sarah is a disputes practitioner with deep experience in contentious taxation matters.

Sarah has almost 30 years’ experience as a dispute resolution lawyer and a wealth of experience in managing contentious taxation matters. She has advised clients (across sectors including financial services, resources and technology) at all stages of revenue disputes including early engagement, risk reviews, audits, objections, independent reviews and contested proceedings. She is considered a trusted adviser to her clients and is highly regarded for her commerciality, strategic approach and her ability to deliver excellent outcomes while preserving good relationships.

Sarah is a former Partner of Freehills in the Disputes Group (1999 to 2011) where she acted for clients across a wide range of disputes including tax, contract and corporations law matters and in respect of various regulatory reviews and investigations. She moved to KPMG where she was a Partner in their Tax Controversy Practice for seven years focussing exclusively on contentious taxation matters. She assisted a wide range of clients to prevent, manage and resolve strategic and complex revenue disputes.  She acted on a broad range of taxation issues, including international taxation, transfer pricing and general anti-avoidance as well as state tax matters.

Prior to rejoining Herbert Smith Freehills as a Consultant, Sarah also worked for the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) assisting them to resolve one of the ATO’s most significant, complex and long running disputes.

Background

Sarah has run proceedings in Courts and Tribunals across Australia. However, her focus is on resolving disputes efficiently and early and she has successfully resolved a large number of disputes through direct negotiation or other alternative dispute resolution processes.
