Yannis Vrodos
Yannis is a senior project development lawyer in our Perth office’s Projects, Energy & Infrastructure team, advising on globally significant transactions.
Yannis advises private, ASX-listed, and public sector clients on the world’s most major, strategic and important energy, mining and infrastructure projects. He also has extensive experience in advising lenders and financiers; government and government trading enterprises; and investors.
He is a trusted advisor of Herbert Smith Freehills’ clients, who demonstrates extensive sector-expertise in advising on contracting strategy and structuring; tendering and procurement processes; and the drafting, negotiation and contract management of development arrangements throughout the life cycle of a project. Yannis enables his clients to navigate complex projects with confidence, in order to achieve successful project outcomes.
Yannis advises on the extensive range of contractual documentation used in Australian and international projects, including. EPC; D&C; EPCM; BOO; BOOT; DBOM; PPP agreements; alliance and relationship contracting; development agreements; services agreements; consultancy agreements; O&M agreements; goods and supply agreements; PPAs; mining services agreements; and offtake agreements. He has experience with bespoke, Australian Standards; FIDIC; and NEC forms of contract.
Yannis also advises on general commercial contracting, outsourced services, digital infrastructure development, and statutory and contractual interpretation and regulatory advice.
He has advised on projects in every Australian jurisdiction, and in Singapore; Hong Kong; Malaysia; Taiwan; Japan; Morocco, Bosnia & Herzegovina, and numerous African jurisdictions (including Sierra Leone, Ethiopia, Mali, South Africa, Eritrea, Nigeria, Tanzania, and Burkina Faso).
Yannis is an active member of the Australian Institute of Energy, Clean Energy Council, and Society of Construction Law Australia.
Background
Yannis holds a Bachelor of Laws (First Class Honours) and Bachelor of Science (Chemistry) from the University of Western Australia.
He is also an Adjunct Lecturer at the UWA Law School.

- Iluka Resources as a strategic advisor on its innovative Balranald critical minerals project in New South Wales, with specific emphasis on the engineering, procurement and construction management arrangements for developing this mineral sands project. This project utilises new technologies that offer a significant reduction in environmental disturbance and carbon intensity.
- Synergy on the development of the 180 MW Warradarge Wind Farm, Kwinana BESS (Stage 1), Kwinana BESS (Stage 2), Collie BESS (Stage 1), Warradarge Wind Farm Stage 2, and King Rocks Wind Farm.
- BHP / OZ Minerals on the 12 Mtpa Mineral Processing Plant for the $1.7 billion West Musgrave Nickel-Copper Project, including the preparation and negotiation of a Construct Only Contract, Equipment Supply Contract, an EPCM Agreement, and an EPC Contract, and providing strategic advice on contract structuring and contract management.
- Norilsk Nickel PJSC MMC on the procurement of AUD 560 million in engineering services and equipment in connection with its AUD 5.5 billion environmentally-focused upgrade project to key mine processing plant.
- Horizon Power on arrangements for its outsourced engineering services panel, including strategic advice, preparation of tender documents, lead negotiator of contracts, and stakeholder management with executive, board and Western Australian government.
