Leading global law firm Herbert Smith Freehills has assisted China energy major and longstanding client Sinochem on the completion the disposal of its interests in oil-and-gas exploration blocks in south Sumatra.

“The team was honoured to be entrusted with all aspects of what became a very complicated process,” said Beijing partner Calvin Ho. “This included guiding Sinochem throughout the international sale process and assisting them with the complex challenges of cross-border disposals by state-owned enterprises.”

“Managing disposals such as this over an operating asset meant we were called in to advise on other operating and regulatory issues that arose during the process, adding to what was already a complex disposal,” said Jakarta senior international counsel Matthew Goerke.

“We’re pleased that we helped the client successfully complete such a demanding sale process through virtual means and despite economic uncertainty.”

The firm advised on every aspect of the sale – from preparation of the tender process, vendor due diligence, bidder selection, drafting of transaction documents, negotiating with the preferred bidder, and liaising with the Indonesian Government to close the transaction.
