The Global Arbitration Practice is pleased to announce that Arthur Ma is joining the international arbitration team in Beijing as Counsel and Emily Lam is joining the firm's Hong Kong office as a Senior Consultant.

Arthur is a Chinese national and has extensive experience in international arbitration and cross-border dispute resolution. He has represented Chinese and international clients in arbitration under the CIETAC, ICC, HKIAC, AAA/ICDR and UNCITRAL Rules. His vast experience spans from advising major US private equity firms and funds, leading companies in Canada, Spain and Switzerland to Chinese energy companies and airlines. Prior to joining Herbert Smith Freehills, Arthur worked with a leading Chinese law firm in Beijing and several major US and UK international law firms in their Shanghai, London, Washington DC, Hong Kong and Beijing offices.

Emily joins Herbert Smith Freehills from a US international law firm, with wide ranging experience in general commercial litigation and international arbitration. Her experience includes advising Chinese and international companies on disputes covering banking, commercial contracts, employment, fraud, insolvency and product liability.

Justin D'Agostino, Herbert Smith Freehills' Managing Partner for Greater China, who also heads the firm’s Greater China international arbitration team commented: “We are very pleased to welcome Arthur and Emily to the team. Their arrival is an excellent addition to our fantastic offering in Greater China, and of great benefit to our clients. We have been looking to recruit further senior lawyers with Arthur's and Emily’s calibre for some time now.  Arthur is one of the few candidates in the market who has a truly international practice. Emily has a very impressive professional background with her wide-ranging litigation and arbitration experience. Our increasing number of Chinese clients seeking to work with native Chinese lawyers with excellent dispute resolution and English language capabilities made Arthur and Emily the obvious choice for us.”

Arthur will be working in Beijing with partners May Tai and Jessica Fei. Our wider Greater China international arbitration team also consists of Brenda Horrigan in Shanghai and Justin D'Agostino and Simon Chapman in Hong Kong. Emily will be working closely with partners Gareth Thomas, Kyle Wombolt and Mark Johnson in Hong Kong.
