Herbert Smith Freehills is pleased to announce the promotion of Andrew Cannon to its partnership from 1st May 2014.
Andrew is an international arbitration practitioner in the London office, specialising in core international arbitration work and public international law. He trained at our London office, gained experience outside the firm working at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and on postings to the UK representations to the UN in New York and the EU in Brussels, and returned to the firm in March 2010. Andrew graduated with a first class degree in Law from Cambridge and was also awarded the one year Procter Fellowship to Princeton University, specialising in international law and international relations.
Andrew has broad experience of high value, complex commercial arbitrations for multiple sectors, including energy and technology, under the rules of the ICC, ICSID, LCIA and UNCITRAL, and under a variety of governing laws. His public international law experience is similarly extensive, having advised states, state-owned entities and major companies on highly sensitive sanctions, state immunity, maritime boundary, human rights and investment treaty issues.
Head of the Global Arbitration Practice, Paula Hodges QC, comments "We are delighted about Andrew's promotion to the partnership. Andrew is an exceptionally intelligent, astute lawyer, who has already developed a thriving practice through his own drive, charisma and talent. He is a true asset to the firm".
Some of Andrew's key arbitration credentials include:
- UNCITRAL arbitration and expert determination proceedings against a Central Asian State concerning one of the world's largest oil and gas projects valued at over US$9 billion;
- a US$145 million LCIA arbitration concerning a contract for the sale and purchase of coal from South-East Asia in which the client was awarded 99% of the amount claimed;
- a highly detailed ICC arbitration concerning a confidential IT project involving a major western government; and
- a complex ICC arbitration arising out of a telecommunications project for the largest state-owned company in an EU State; and acting for oil and gas majors in disputes arising from the impact of international sanctions on their operations, including related advice and engagement with government.
