The Law Society of England and Wales has published its 2nd annual report on the global position of English law and dispute resolution in England and Wales.
Its International Data Insights Report 2024 analyses and tracks the performance of the main dispute resolution centres in England and Wales in comparison to other international courts and arbitration centres. It also looks at the value of UK legal services, the use of English law globally and the growth of the UK's legal profession.
Key points outlined in the report include:
- English law is a preferred governing law for international commerce and is frequently chosen as the governing law in international arbitration
- The London Commercial Court remains the leading international centre for the resolution of complex commercial litigation, surpassing New York and other competitors in terms of the number of written judgments delivered
- Nearly 50% of contested trials in the London Commercial Court were completed within one court week (four days) between October 2022 and September 2023
- London continues to be an attractive centre for international arbitration, including maritime arbitrations (with the London Maritime Arbitrators Association handling more maritime disputes than anywhere else in the world)
- The value of UK legal services exports and the size and revenue of the UK's legal profession continue to grow
