Last weekend we took a look at some of the pro bono work that members of our team have been involved in this year, a theme which we're continuing today. The pro bono practice at HSF has a significant history of providing pro bono legal services to clients including charities, NGOs, the governments of developing nations and marginalised individuals.
We are extremely proud of the outcomes our clients achieve for the communities in which we live and work, and the relationships and reputation we have built along the way.
Pro bono work is woven into the fabric of our firm. It’s an opportunity that is not only available to all our lawyers, but is regarded as an essential part of our professional responsibility and treated in exactly the same manner as any other client work.
School-Home Support
In addition to the case studies that we highlighted last week, we also wanted to mention the work of School-Home Support (SHS). School-Home Support is a charity that tackles the issue of persistent and severe school absence. With almost 1 in 5 children persistently absent from school and missing more than 10% of their schooling, SHS Practitioners look beyond the classroom to understand the barriers to education and support the child and their family to overcome these barriers and help get them back to school. The charity aims to reach more children and their families, advocate changes to law, funding and practice to policy makers and support more schools.
School-Home Support approached our Pro Bono team earlier this year looking for assistance with the renewal of the lease of their head office in Stratford. Our work involved reviewing the terms agreed with the landlord, negotiating the lease documentation and working towards the completion of the lease. Shona Grey (Partner), Nick Hew (Senior Associate) and Annabel Davis (Associate) from our Real Estate team assisted School-Home Support on the matter, with Annabel commenting:
We are proud to have assisted School-Home Support with the renewal of their London office lease. It has been a pleasure to work with SHS on this transaction and in doing so, help them to continue their important work with schools across the country.
