Matthew is an associate in the Construction Disputes practice within the International Arbitration group. 

Matthew joined Herbert Smith Freehills in 2020 and is currently based in London, having also spent six months with the International Arbitration group in Paris.

With experience in international arbitration and adjudication, Matthew assists clients with complex and high value construction disputes across a variety of industries and jurisdictions.

Background

Matthew holds a First Class BA degree in Modern Languages (French and Russian) along with an MPhil in International Relations, both from the University of Cambridge. He has since completed the Graduate Diploma in Law and Legal Practice Course (obtaining distinctions in both) and, having trained with the firm, qualified as a solicitor in England and Wales in September 2022.

  • acted for an Italian engineering company in an LCIA arbitration concerning a chemicals manufacturing complex in Western Europe
  • acted for a Romanian provider of aviation services to the oil and gas industry in an ICC arbitration against a subcontractor
  • acting for the claimant, a major developer, in adjudication proceedings relating to defective cladding
