Statistics issued by the Court Connected Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Centre show that between 2007 and 2011 out of 16,080 disputes around 55% were settled through mediation. Ghana embraced ADR some time ago as a complement to the traditional court system in an attempt to make justice cheaper, quicker and non-adversarial. Ghana's current ADR programme extends to 51 District and Circuit courts with at least three mediators assigned to each court. ADR and in particular the "mass mediation exercise" has helped reduce the backlog of cases in the Ghanaian courts. Agreements reached at the end of mediations are sent to the court for adoption as a consent judgment enforceable by the court.
