Our seasonal tradition is to build a big Lego set over the course of the Christmas holiday. We are still deciding which one to build this year! Another tradition is that all three of my children come into the office on Christmas Eve (despite their advancing ages, they still want to) and then we go into town to do something together (crazy golf this year) followed by a visit to look at the best Christmas lights, some last minute Christmas shopping and then a meal together. This also has the benefit of giving Claire a day to herself to prepare for the craziness of Christmas Day! Last one: Claire and I do Parkrun on Christmas morning. A 5k run sets you up nicely for the over-indulgence that follows!

Every Christmas after dinner we listen to a recording of Dylan Thomas reading his short story "A Child's Christmas in Wales". It's filled with all the tall-tales, family and nostalgia that you want from a Christmas story. At one point, he says "It was always snowing at Christmas. December, in my memory, is white as Lapland, although there were no reindeers." and I am always reminded of my Nain (Welsh for grandmother) who used to tell us about her childhood in rural mid-Wales in the 30s when the snow drifts were so deep you could walk across the churchyard above the top of all the headstones.

Our Christmas tradition is to make fresh mince pies on Christmas Eve. My daughters leave a lovely fresh mince pie for Father Christmas before they go to bed. However, as he gets lots of glasses of milk left out by other children, my daughters leave him a good splash of whisky instead "to warm him up" in his sleigh. I get to enjoy the mince pie (leaving some crumbs, of course) whilst my husband gets the whisky! Their excitement to check the empty plate and glass first thing on Christmas morning is a wonderful start to the festive celebrations.

[For younger readers, don't worry - Santa always asks Shanna to scoff the mince pie because he's full up with all the others he's eaten as he delivers presents on his way from Australia! Ed]
My family tradition is that my sister and I play piano duets of carols together on Christmas morning. It sounds very blissful and traditional, but it actually just descends into chaos fairly quickly with us trying to race each other through Good King Wenceslas …

One tradition for my family is on Christmas Eve - we always have dinner outside (round a fire!!). It started about 15 years ago, when there were so many of us at Christmas that eating outside seemed like an easier option, and it has firmly stuck… except for the year there was torrential rain on Christmas Eve!
