Alex is an experienced technology lawyer.

Alex is an experienced technology lawyer with expertise in technology transactions and the technology aspects of corporate transactions. Alex also has specialist knowledge in emerging technology legal issues with a focus on the use and regulation of artificial intelligence (AI); web 3.0 issues including the metaverse and the issuance of crypto-assets such as NFTs; and autonomous vehicles. Alex is co-lead for the Artificial Intelligence stream of the Herbert Smith Freehills Emerging Technology Group in Australia.

Alex has substantial experience acting for a range of large corporate and Government customers on high value IT contracts. This experience is augmented by significant involvement advising technology suppliers.

Alex has experience working with clients across a range of sectors including financial services, communications, transport, health, retail, utilities and Government. Alex is also experienced in business process outsourcing, e-commerce, data privacy, digital content and telecommunications services.

In his current role, Alex works as a core member of the Herbert Smith Freehills (HSF) TMT practice advising Australian and multinational corporates on commercial transactions with a technology component, as well as supporting corporate M&A transactions on technology and IP licensing. Alex is a core member of the HSF Emerging Technology Group which focuses on legal issues arising from the use of emerging technologies such as AI, crypto-assets, the metaverse, autonomous vehicles, digital twin technology and quantum computing.

Background

Alex worked for a number of years in London (including 4 years in-house) often working on deals in other European countries before relocating to Australia. He also has experience working in Asia.

advised a national bank on its implementation of a governance framework for use of artificial intelligence across the organisation, including data and AI ethics principles and legal guardrails
advised an Australian wine producer in its first issue of a non-fungible token (NFT) for a barrel of one of its most select wine labels, equivalent to 350 bottles. The NFT was to be sold and traded on the secondary market
advised a national bank on procurement of a new core banking system. The project involved an agile development methodology to retain development flexibility for the Bank to refine its requirements during the development stage
a national airline on agreements for outsourced passenger ticketing and check-in services addressing sales, distribution and merchandising; passenger recognition; electronic ticketing; e-commerce; inventory and revenue management; check-in and departure control
advised an energy supplier on its cybersecurity contract including a managed security operations centre (SOC) responsible for vulnerability management and security information event management (SIEM)
